Hi Everyone!
Today I have a really fun creative technique to share with you...and two amazing samples that utilize the technique too. The process of photo transfers is great because the image becomes part of the piece (vs. just adhering a photo to a wood block) and also because you can create an image transfer using many different sources - a photo, images from a laser printer, magazines, newspapers, etc.
Some tips to doing a photo transfer using a acrylic gel medium:
Image: Any image can be used for transferring, although some work significantly better than others. Uncoated magazines/newspapers work well, but more coated photos/postcards/etc. may or may not transfer well - Images printed from a laser printer work best. NOTE: If there are words on your images, you will need to print the mirror image so they transfer correctly.
Brush: You can use any brush you'd like, whether bristle or foam. The different textures of the brushes will lay the get medium down differently and produce varied effects.
Surface: The surface you are transferring to must have some texture. Canvas, and unfinished wood work great. Slick surfaces like MDF or particle board do not work.
The first sample I wanted to share are these photo blocks that have had photos and a Minnesota postcard image transferred onto them. I love the look of the finished blocks and also love how the project captures some great photos/memories in a way that can be displayed beautifully. A project sheet for this project can be found HERE.
Another fun project is this "Our Songs" coaster set. This project uses one of our unfinished wood coaster sets. The images that were transferred to the wood coasters are of the album covers of favorite artists and songs. I think this project would be a perfect anniversary or Christmas present - and could also be created with more specific themes as well - such as Fall or Halloween images. So many possibilities!! A project sheet for this project can be found HERE.
